I'm trying a Zenoah crank in a FS engine, and all seems well exept the clutch side shaft is about 5mm longer on the Zen crank. This makes the clutch hit the clutch bell in the car.. I suspect the clutch center piece for Zen engines is shorter, and would correct the problem? Can somebody confirm this?

I can now answer this one myself. The zenoah crank needs the zenoah center piece for the clutch or the clutch will hit the clutch bell. Here are the pics with the FS clutch to the left. The zenoah spring is a lot harder than the FS spring. However, the spring on the CF is similar to the Zen spring. I know the clutch shoes are on the wrong way, I just put them on for the photo.. So, the conclusion is that the Zen crank works fine as long as the clutch center is replaced with it.

goodwork, would be nice if we can get a DIY going on rebuilding the FS engine with ZEN parts... hint hint

It's not that difficult : pull the engine apart , rip out the FS crankshaft and replace with a Zen crankshaft Did it with my FS engine (while it was apart for some Dremel tuning) so i could use a FG Teflon 4 shoe clutch. I'll probably be looking in to converting it in to a 3 bearing style engine like the new Zens have somewhere during the winter. Dual bearings on the clutch-side will improve engine/bearing life. Already did it to the G230 crankcase i used for the 30,5cc ONB Raceported kit , it's not that much work.

I agree, just pull apart and put the zen crank in Many replace the dual bearings with one bearing+seal, because they have problems with the seals on the bearings leaking.

A small amount of leaking should be no big deal , been running nitro's for years and most of them leaked small amounts of fuel without any problems. Because of the huge amount of torque the 30,5cc has I wanted some extra support on the clutch-side , another big+ for me is the reduced drag on the crankshaft . That's why I also used a zero drag seal on the flywheel-side If it starts leaking I'll look in to it , maybe replace the inner bearing with a one-sided sealed bearing as a extra barrier.

Ok! Guess the leaking is not that serious. I noticed that the zen seals create a lot less drag than the FS seals. Also some PTFE spray helped reduce the drag in the seals(and the engine was running better too). I never tried the low drag seals..

Got a set of brass seals to try it of E-bay for €10,- , a lot cheaper as most shops. The pitstop shop (one of the best known big-scale shop over here) sells them for 30,- ....
Drag is seriously reduced even when you're using Zen seals , the brass surface is much smoother. A few small drops of 2-stroke oil makes them as smooth as silk .

I had a look at them, but it seems they are not recommended if the engine has a clutch (mainly for boat engines). Since there is some leaking, the leaking will be both ways, ie it will probably also suck in dust in the bearings, and the rest of the engine.. I think the brass will wear quickly when some dust gets in there.. Well, there is always a balance between performance and reliability.
